Turkish Kurds Invade UN in Geneva Despite Security

GENEVA Turkish Kurd protesters broke into United Nations headquarters in Geneva on Friday despite huge security a day after U.S. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Cuban leader Fidel Castro visited the complex. The group of about 30 unarmed Kurdish men rushed past security guards and forced their way into a lobby at the Palais des Nations, where they said they would stay until the UN acted to stop Turkish attacks against their people.

UN security guards said one of their number was injured as the Kurds smashed windows in the 1930s complex and occupied a hall used as the reception area for high-level visitors. The incident is embarrassing for the UN and Swiss security, just before a key world trade summit in Geneva to be attended by world leaders, including U.S. President Bill Clinton on Monday. Geneva police have brought in reinforcements, cancelled all leave and set up a huge security operation for the occasion.

Mrs Clinton and Castro, who both attended the annual meeting of the World Health Organization, are still in town, while other leaders including Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Pritish Prime Minister Tony Blair and Italy's Romano Prodi are expected next week for the World Trade Organization summit.
